Before anyone thinks I’m going to contradict what I said a few weeks back in my post on Game vs Frame, the title of this post has been cut-off. The whole title should be “It’s All In The Mind (?).” That’s because I definitely don’t think that everything comes down to mindset at the end of the day. If you’re a low value piece-of-shit then you’re not attractive, no matter how delusional you are. Mindset is, however, still very important: high quality raw materials without the appropriate mental backing get downgraded.
I always like to remind myself of the following:
If you try to go to sleep and can’t, or wake up early and can’t go back, and only end up getting four hours of sleep, you’d be annoyed with yourself for the rest of the day. Every slip up at work and missed rep in the gym would be blamed on it. Take the same hours of sleep before an early flight – perhaps you had to wake up at 3 or 4am – and you feel accomplished.
I think that this is a good example of what’s in the mind or not. It’s your perception of the hours of sleep that changes how you feel. Maybe we can extend that to the rest of our lives. In How I Met Your Mother Barney jokes that “when I’m feeling sad I stop feeling sad and feel awesome instead.”
Another thing I like to remind myself is how I was in a martial arts class once as a kid and had to hold some position for an ungodly amount of time. The teacher said something simple but so important to us:
You’re brain usually gives out before your body
I want to make a disclaimer here: I am not saying this to people with serious mental health conditions because they ought to see a trained professional. However, we do live in a world of superlatives. People love to exclaim how they experienced trauma or are feeling depressed, when they’ve really just had a below average day. It’s to those people that I’m speaking. Next time you feel a bit down, remind yourself how you have the power to control how you feel. Don’t let your mind hold you back. You can influence your mood.
