Coaching Review by Mr N

Last week I had the pleasure of coaching Mr N in London. As an intermediate we focused on freeing Mr N from the model and developing his authenticity. Here’s what he had to say about the experience. Thanks Mr N!

I received coaching after my 1000 sets of hell and a dozen or so lays from daygame. The focus was to run a diagnostic of my game.

I believe Tom has a structured process for coaching, but we quickly deviated from that as it didn’t suit my game level. With one line, Tom’s philosophy is “We aim to be naturals”, simple to hear but with major inner game implications. Such approach tends for an acceptance of what life gives (our value is about static on the short term, barring vibe), and a focus on calibration (targeting and in-set), fluidity and not too exaggerated body language.

Coaching in daygame is unique, as the student needs to balance the logical brain (questions and feedback) with the emotional brain (i.e. vibe). Juggling the two inevitably leads to a drop in vibe (how much is up to the individual), and the coach’s skill therefore is to catch the issues that matter and ignore things that arose due to the above inconsistency.

Here are two examples and how Tom gave feedback:

  1. Body language: I was moving a little bit too much in set. This is something I wasn’t conscious and wouldn’t have caught it otherwise. Tom was quick to point it out.
  2. Catching up to the girl: As I was new to London, I had some trouble figuring out when I can catch up to the girl (people walk faster, new geography and takes more time to close the distance). This is an issue I was both conscious and would probably correct itself given more time in London. Tom correctly didn’t
    even mention it.

The session: We did a 4 hour session that was split between approaching, feedback and game theory. The last one was particularly important, as I gravitate towards solo daygame, and I had limited view of what others do/get from daygame. There was a coffee break in the middle and we also had a drink at the end. Post-coaching, Tom gave a full recording of the session and detailed notes.

Overall, I had a great session with Tom that clarified questions and paved the way for deeper aspects of daygame. I can vouch for his coaching
